Tito’s Handmade Vodka Now Available In SA

Premium spirits company, Truman & Orange has announced that Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Austin’s original craft vodka, is now available in SA.

Tito’s Handmade Vodka is produced in Austin, Texas, at the oldest legal distillery.  For most of the past century any spirit produced in Texas was moonshine and illegal.  Although legalised after the prohibition, liquor distilleries were all but unheard of and it was fifth-generation Texan, Bert “Tito” Beveridge, creator of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, who, in 1995, took on state and federal licensing authorities to obtain a legal permit.  Thanks to his efforts, today there are over 100 independent small-scale distilleries that are producing liquor in Texas.

Tito’s Handmade Vodka is produced in batches, using old-fashioned copper pot stills for its distillation process. Each batch is taste-tested to ensure the true flavour of Tito’s Handmade Vodka is never lost. The distinctly smooth and sweet taste of Tito’s Handmade Vodka is owed to corn that is chosen as a base for the spirit production, instead of commonly used wheat.  The result is that Tito’s Handmade Vodka is naturally gluten-free.

Explains Rowan Leibbrandt of Truman & Orange, “Tito’s Handmade Vodka uses a more expensive and time-consuming distillation process, similar to those used to make the finest Single Malts and Cognacs, which require more skill and effort, something that is not essential in the vodka industry. However, the smooth and well-rounded taste of Tito’s Handmade Vodka proves that it’s worth it.”

“There is a huge opportunity for brands such as Tito’s Handmade Vodka to establish themselves in emerging markets across Africa; the vodka category has shown dynamic growth over the last years and is now the 2nd largest spirit category in SA. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is an exciting addition on vodka shelves across the country and will be welcomed by all drinkers who enjoy discovering new, interesting spirits and travel across the categories enriching their drinking repertoire,” says Leibbrandt.

Tito Beveridge was an ordinary American working in the mortgage industry who enjoyed experimenting with infused vodkas in his spare time. He was known as ‘the vodka guy’ amongst his friends and acquaintances who were often treated to his vodkas at parties. Once, during a moment of truth, Tito realised he needed to leave his job and follow his passion. After endless tests and combinations he finally settled on corn as the base for his spirit because of the soft, rounded shoulders and smooth, crisp finish that it gave his vodka.

In 1995, after maxing out 19 credit cards, Tito obtained the first legal permit to distill in Texas and built a distillery in Austin, equipped with a copper still and Tito himself, to run the show. The journey of success had him working endless days and nights, dealing with skeptics and sharing his garage as a home with his dog. In 2001, Tito’s Handmade Vodka caught a break at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition where it was awarded the prestigious Judge’s Choice Double Gold Award beating 72 world premium vodka brands.

Today, Tito’s Handmade Vodka continues to receive critical acclaim for its impeccably pure taste, affordability and brand growth. It is distilled and bottled by Fifth Generation Inc. in Austin, Texas and is available in over 100 markets, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, Middle East and Africa.

Tito is a huge philanthropist and animal lover and during the last year alone, the company partnered with over 6000 charity organisations. Committed to animal welfare, Tito’s started Vodka for Dog People, a program to unite friends, fans, and partners to better the lives of pets and their families far and wide. Today, many of these rescued dogs are part of the team at the company’s distillery and offices.

In South Africa, Tito’s Handmade Vodka is available nationwide in all good liquor stores, bars and restaurants in a 750-ml bottle at 43% Vol. Alc.  Tito’s Handmade Vodka retails at approximately R280/ bottle.
